Heavy rain brought by Typhoon Mekkhala, the seventh typhoon of the year, has battered large parts of Taiwan, causing widespread flooding in several areas.
Taiwan's meteorological authorities have issued heavy rain alerts for 19 counties and cities. Extremely heavy rain warnings have been issued for Kaohsiung and Pingtung County.
Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung County and Hsinchu County have suspended work and classes on Friday (June 26).
As of noon on Friday, more than 480 flooding incidents had been reported across Taiwan, with the hardest-hit areas concentrated in the south. Floodwaters remained in 74 locations.
The torrential rain has also severely disrupted transportation. Taiwan Railways said sections of the southern portion of the Western Trunk Line between Tainan and Kaohsiung were inundated, forcing the suspension of train services in both directions.
