According to CCTV International News, on June 21 local time, the Iranian national football team played their second group-stage match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, holding European powerhouse Belgium to a 0-0 draw.
After the match, the team was once again ordered to leave the US immediately and return to their base in Tijuana, Mexico. Before departing, the Iranian team left a note in the stadium locker room, thanking Los Angeles and stating that they had fought for honour and were leaving with dignity.
The note read: "From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the Spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast." They also thanked Iranian supporters for pouring their "heart, voice, and soul" into the team during the two matches, and expressed a hope that peace, respect, and friendship would endure among all nations.
Due to restrictions on their stay in the US, the Iranian team has been based in Tijuana, Mexico, throughout the World Cup tournament, travelling to and from the US to play matches. In addition, multiple Iranian team staff members and football federation officials have been barred from entry to the US. On June 26 local time, Iran will face their final group-stage opponent, Egypt, in Seattle.
