Full of anticipation when emigrating to the UK, she was met only with endless housework and marital resentment.
Recently, a Hong Kong wife who moved to the UK posted on social media under the headline "Breaking! Being a Partner in the UK Isn't that Easy," complaining that she had been reduced to a full-time housewife after emigrating. Life was dull enough, but a few days ago, hot weather sparked a major domestic blow-up that ultimately forced her to flee the house.
The post quickly sparked heated discussion among netizens, with many saying that the high divorce rate among Hong Kong emigrants to the UK is no coincidence. Some even mocked, "HOW BIG a deal is it to install an AC (air conditioner)? Why suffer through the heat year after year?"
The woman, posting on Threads, vented her frustrations, saying that the recent sweltering heat in the UK unexpectedly became the trigger for her husband's temper. She revealed that she was in the kitchen preparing homemade lemon tea to cool down when her husband suddenly lost his temper and yelled at her, "You're still boiling stuff in that weather?"
The wife shot back immediately, "So we don't need to eat when it's hot?" Should we just go on a saline drip instead?!" She added that it was her children's mid-term break at the time, and the house was already chaotic. With her husband's inexplicable outburst on top of that, she ended up leaving home.
The woman sadly asked, "Am I the only one this damn miserable here?" She also confessed that she sometimes really misses her old life in Hong Kong—not having to be cooped up at home all day and living the life of working until late at night.
The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread online discussion. Many netizens expressed confusion over why the family hadn't installed air conditioning.
"Is buying an AC really that big a deal? Why suffer through the heat year after year?" "Just get an AC installed."
Some netizens also pointed out that such everyday frictions are common in emigrant marriages, remarking, "This is why so many Hong Kong emigrants to the UK end up divorced."
Other Hong Kong wives who moved to the UK and related to the post chimed in, "Honestly, so frustrating! That guy goes off to work and knows nothing about what goes on at home, yet he only sends messages telling me to do this and that. I also really miss the days when I used to work in Hong Kong!" "Funny that, my other half just lost his temper too. "Locals normally just do nothing when it's this hot. Life in Europe is like this—people just find any excuse to slack off. You have to understand that women lose so many opportunities to meet people after moving to the UK and end up stuck with just their husbands and kids all day. My husband and I both do office jobs, our income is decent, we don't have a mortgage, and we live better than most. But I still lose my temper for no reason all the time—no friends, no family, the house is a mess, and when I ask those two to do chores, they only ever do half the job. It's impossible not to lose your temper."
