The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, has already kicked off. The Iranian national team's training base is set up in Tijuana, a border city in Mexico. On June 12, a body concealment case was discovered at Estadio Caliente, where the Iranian team trains. Local police found a decomposed body in the trunk of a car near the stadium, less than 300 meters from the training ground. Authorities have since launched an investigation.
According to reports, the body was found inside a gray Toyota SUV with US license plates. Police disclosed that the vehicle had been abandoned in the parking lot since around June 10. After opening the trunk, officers discovered a severely decomposed body inside a black bag, with visible signs of violent trauma. Forensic investigators in protective suits examined the scene before removing the body.
Tijuana, a Mexican border city adjacent to San Diego, US, is known as a dangerous area plagued by drug cartels. Last year, the city recorded over 1,200 homicides, giving it an extremely high murder rate. The Tijuana District Attorney's Office has launched an investigation into the incident, but no further details regarding suspects or motives have been released. The case is believed to be a local gang-related crime, rather than a direct threat targeting the Iranian team.
Since arriving in Mexico, the Iranian team has been under tight armed protection. The Mexican National Guard escorts the team during trips between their hotel and the stadium, and their camp is heavily guarded by security forces.
