After resting and regrouping following the conclusion of the World Table Tennis Championships in London, the Chinese men's table tennis team reassembled in Beijing in early June. Head coach Wang Hao announced that, following an election, Wang Chuqin has succeeded Ma Long as the new captain of the Chinese men's national team.
In an interview today (June 11), Wang Chuqin responded, "Captain Long and I are really not in the same league. I didn't think I could be captain – it's too difficult." He admitted, "When you have no way out, you have to turn it into positive energy. Think about the admirable qualities of Captain Long, learn from him, and integrate them into yourself."
In the early hours of May 11 Beijing time, the Chinese table tennis team secured their 12th consecutive men's team title at the World Table Tennis Championships in London. After helping China win the championship, Wang Chuqin received the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) best men's player award.
According to the world rankings released by WTT on May 25, Wang Chuqin ranks world No. 1 in men's singles.
