Wellington was hit by massive waves and powerful winds on June 9, local time, prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of coastal residents and suspend ferry services and some flights, according to media reports.
The reports said New Zealand's capital experienced waves reaching up to 11 meters along its southern coastline, accompanied by winds of up to 100 km/h. Wind gusts in some areas reached as high as 137 km/h.
A light aircraft parked at Wellington airport was overturned by the strong winds. No one was on board at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Local authorities declared a state of emergency in the southern and eastern parts of the city and issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents living along Wellington's southern coast. Several roads have also been closed due to the severe weather conditions.
The large waves are expected to continue until Wednesday morning.
Meteorologists have warned of possible coastal flooding and urged residents in affected coastal communities to stay informed about the latest weather updates.
According to reports, a similar incident occurred at Breaker Bay in 2021, when waves reached approximately 6.5 meters in height.
