Hong Kong police have arrested a 65-year-old local man in connection with an alleged indecent assault on a schoolgirl aboard a KMB Route 16 bus in Mong Kok after a video of the incident circulated on social media.
According to online posts, the incident occurred at around 12:10 p.m. on June 5 on a Route 16 bus in Mong Kok. A video widely shared online appeared to show a male passenger seated in the rear section of the bus slowly reaching forward and touching the side of a female student's chest, allegedly indecently assaulting her.
Police said today (June 6) that officers launched an investigation immediately after discovering the video circulating online. Through the Mong Kok police district's school liaison officer, investigators successfully contacted the female victim and obtained details of the case.
Officers also reviewed a large volume of surveillance footage, including images captured by police-installed CCTV cameras in the district.
With assistance from KMB, police quickly identified the suspect and arrested a 65-year-old local man surnamed Wu at an inbound checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on the evening of June 5. The suspect, who reported his occupation as a salesperson, was unknown to the victim.
Police said the victim had just finished school and was travelling home by bus at the time of the incident. Due to the shock caused by the incident, she was unable to report the case to police immediately afterward.
Authorities said they would maintain close contact with the victim's family and school and provide appropriate support and assistance.
The suspect remains in police custody. Police said bail will be opposed and that he will be charged directly with indecent assault.
