Seven people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in a series of shootings in the US state of Iowa on June 1, local time, authorities said. Police believe the attacks were linked to a family-related dispute.
According to local law enforcement, the shootings took place at two residences and a business in the city of Muscatine.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at a residence at approximately 12:12 p.m. local time, where they discovered four people dead at the scene. The suspect had already fled before police arrived.
Authorities later located the suspect near a trail along the Mississippi River. During an encounter with officers, the 52-year-old suspect shot himself. He was transported for medical treatment but later died from his injuries.
As the investigation continued, police discovered two additional victims at a second residence and a nearby business. Both victims had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The Muscatine Police Department said preliminary investigations indicate the shootings stemmed from a family-related dispute. Authorities believe all of the victims were family members of the suspect.
