Typhoon Jangmi is approaching Japan's Okinawa region, bringing strong winds and widespread disruption.
According to a report by Japan's public broadcaster NHK today (June 1), more than 7,000 households in Okinawa have lost power as the typhoon moves closer to the area. Two people were taken to hospital after falling due to strong winds.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said Typhoon Jangmi was located over waters southeast of Miyako Island in Okinawa at 12 a.m. on Monday. The storm was moving northward at a speed of approximately 20 kilometres per hour.
Forecasters expect the typhoon to continue strengthening as it tracks north. The storm is projected to move close to Okinawa and the Amami region on June 1 and 2.
The JMA said Typhoon Jangmi is expected to pass closest to Okinawa on Monday and approach Amami on Tuesday before turning northeast toward western and eastern Japan. The agency warned that the storm could reach areas near Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo as early as Wednesday (June 3).
The approaching typhoon has also disrupted air travel. Several airlines operating flights between Hong Kong and Okinawa have announced cancellations or delays.
Hong Kong Express (UO) said that, due to the impact of Typhoon Jangmi, flights UO844, UO845, UO824 and UO825 between HK and Okinawa scheduled for June 1, 2026, have been cancelled. The airline also announced the cancellation of flights UO842 and UO843 originally scheduled to depart on June 2, 2026.
