The Very Hot Weather Warning remains in effect. The Hong Kong Observatory said this morning (May 28) that Hong Kong will be generally fine and very hot during the day, with a maximum temperature of about 34 degrees Celsius in the urban areas, and one or two degrees higher in the New Territories. Tomorrow (May 29) will be extremely hot during the day, with temperatures reaching 36 to 37 degrees in the New Territories, followed by a few showers and thunderstorms later. There will still be a few showers on Saturday (May 30) and Sunday (May 31), and the high temperatures will ease. Over the following two to three days, there will be sunny periods and it will be hot during the day.

The Observatory stated that an anticyclone aloft will bring extremely hot weather to Guangdong today and tomorrow. As a trough of low pressure approaches the southern China coast, there will be showers and squally thunderstorms in the region tomorrow later and on Saturday. Meanwhile, an easterly airstream will affect the Guangdong coast over the weekend, easing the high temperatures. A broad trough of low pressure is expected to bring unsettled weather to the central part of the South China Sea from early to mid-next week.

In addition, the Observatory reported that Tropical Depression Jangmi has intensified into a Tropical Storm. At 8 am, Jangmi was centred about 360 kilometres northwest of Yap Island. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour, crossing the western North Pacific east of the Philippines and gradually intensifying, generally moving towards the waters east of Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands.
