According to foreign media reports, a major chemical explosion occurred on May 26 at a Japanese paper manufacturing plant in Longview, Washington, USA, killing at least one person, injuring several others, and leaving nine missing.
The incident occurred around 7:30 am local time. The company involved is a factory operated by Nippon Dynawave Packaging Co., a Japanese paper manufacturing company. The explosion was caused by the implosion of a tank storing "white liquor" — a chemical mixture used in the paper-making process — which resulted in multiple cases of chemical burns and other injuries. According to CNN, the tank has a capacity of 80,000 gallons; however, it was actually holding approximately 900,000 gallons of white liquor at the time of the incident.
The local fire department stated that there is no direct threat to the surrounding communities, but advised residents to avoid the area. Moreover, due to the active conditions of the storage tanks on site, safety hazards remain, making subsequent recovery and stabilization efforts "extremely complex."
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
