At 11:08 pm Beijing time on May 24, the Long March 2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-23 manned spacecraft ignited and launched at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Hong Kong's first astronaut, Lai Ka-ying, joined the mission as part of the crew.
According to a video released by CCTV News' official WeChat account, as the crew rode in vehicles to the launch site, the three astronauts, including Lai Ka-ying, sang "Ode to the Motherland" in unison. Lai also delivered a "pre-launch speech" in both Putonghua and Cantonese, saying, "China Space Station, here I come!"
