From the evening of May 23 to the early morning of May 24, heavy rainfall struck multiple areas of Yongchuan District, Chongqing. Some areas experienced torrential rain of extreme intensity, leaving several people missing. Local authorities are currently carrying out emergency rescue operations.
The Yongchuan Flood Control and Rescue On-Site Command Center issued a situation report stating that from 11:00 pm on May 23 to approximately 8:20 am on May 24, Yongchuan District experienced an extreme torrential rainstorm. In the Chashan Zhuhai Subdistrict area, the maximum rainfall reached 296.6 millimeters between 2:00 am and 4:00 am, with a maximum hourly rainfall of 103.6 millimeters. The sudden, intense downpour resulted in 17 people missing and 1 death. Following the flood event, the municipal and district-level flood control and drought relief headquarters quickly activated emergency responses. The main responsible official of the municipal party committee immediately connected via video for remote coordination, and the deputy secretary of the municipal party committee rushed to the scene without delay. Rescue and response efforts are currently being carried out at full capacity.
According to earlier reports from meteorological authorities, from 11:00 pm on May 23 to 6:00 am on May 24, parts of central and western Chongqing experienced heavy to extremely heavy rain, with some areas seeing torrential downpours of unusual intensity, while other areas received scattered showers. In Yongchuan District, Guankouwan (296.7 mm) and Hanjiagou Village (256.9 mm) recorded extreme torrential rain. Given the short interval between this round of heavy rainfall and the previous one, the risk of geological disasters triggered by continuous rainfall is significantly higher. Landslides, collapses, and mudslides are more likely to occur. Chongqing activated a Level III geological disaster emergency response for Yongchuan District at 7:00 am on May 24.
