Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince published a commentary on WSJ yesterday (May 22), revealing the decision-making logic behind the company's layoffs of over 20% of its workforce. He said that the layoffs were not due to operational difficulties, characterizing them instead as a proactive business restructuring.
Prince classified internal roles into three categories: "Builders," who develop products; "Sellers," who expand the market; and "Measurers," which include internal governance, audits, operations, and other functions.
He argued that Builders and Sellers will not be replaced by AI—improvements in engineer productivity will lead companies to hire more engineers, while sales roles rely on interpersonal trust and are similarly difficult to automate. Measurers, however, are different: AI can perform such work continuously at lower cost and with higher precision.
Based on this assessment, the main targets of Cloudflare's layoffs were precisely the Measurers: middle management positions were significantly reduced, operations functions were consolidated into a single team, and both the marketing and finance departments saw cuts.
