According to a report by Wired, Meta launched a new round of layoffs on May 20, affecting approximately 8,000 employees, or about 10% of the company's total workforce of nearly 80,000. Layoff notifications were sent simultaneously via both personal and company email addresses at 4 a.m. local time in Singapore, London, and San Francisco.
Following the confirmation of the layoffs, multiple employees revealed a concentrated rush to use up company benefits. Some employees hurried to exhaust their annual US$2,000 flexible benefits allowance before the deadline, using it for health and living expenses.
Others rushed to claim a once‑every‑three‑year US$200 audio equipment subsidy to purchase items including AirPods. At the same time, multiple Meta offices in New York and Menlo Park have been nearly empty this week, with employees either polishing their résumés elsewhere or gathering with colleagues to say goodbye. Management also advised employees not to come into the office.
