On the evening of May 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing, commencing a state visit to China. According to reports from Russian news agency TASS, there is a special arrangement during President Putin's visit to China from May 19 to 20 — a "reunion" with a Chinese engineer named Peng Pai. Now, the little boy who took a photo with Putin 26 years ago wants to say this to the Russian president: "You are still as charismatic as ever, while I have transformed from a little boy into a middle-aged man with a bit of a belly."
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that when Putin made his first official visit to China in 2000, he met a Chinese boy named Peng Pai. "President Putin will meet this Chinese engineer again," Ushakov said, emphasizing the significance of this "reunion": "We see this as a symbolic meeting."
From July 17 to 19, 2000, Putin made his first visit to China as President of the Russian Federation. During that visit, after touring the Forbidden City, Putin suddenly suggested boating on Beihai (North Lake). As this was an impromptu addition to the schedule, the security team was momentarily very busy and tense. At that time, Putin interacted with a young Chinese boy named Peng Pai, and this heartwarming scene was captured by a photojournalist.
TASS reported, "That moment had a profound impact on Peng Pai's life. He mastered the Russian language, graduated from a university in Moscow, and his friends even call him by a Russian name — Pavel (Pasha). This name carries the deep bond forged by that historic meeting."
