An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Friday (May 15), the country's weather agency said.
No immediate injuries or damage have been reported.
The temblor occurred at 8:22 p.m. local time at a depth of 50 km, measuring lower 5 on Japan's seismic scale of 7 in the hardest-hit areas in Miyagi Prefecture, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake's epicenter was located off the coast of Miyagi at a latitude of 38.9 degrees north and a longitude of 142.1 degrees east.
No tsunami warning was issued, according to the JMA.
