Woman, 70s, found dead after HK public housing flat fire in Tung Chung

A woman in her 70s was found dead after a fire broke out at a flat in Yu Tung Court in Tung Chung in the early hours of Friday (May 15).

The incident occurred at around 4:42 a.m. at a mid-floor unit in Hei Tung House of Yu Tung Court, where smoke and flames were seen coming from the flat, prompting multiple residents to call police.

Around 300 residents were evacuated to safety following the incident.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and deployed one hose and a breathing apparatus team to tackle the blaze. The fire was extinguished at about 5:22 a.m.

A female resident in her 70s was later found dead inside the unit.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was believed to have started from an electrical appliance connected to a power strip inside the flat.
