The ruling Labour Party suffered a severe defeat in the UK local elections. The Party leader and Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces growing pressure.
The BBC reported that some members of the Cabinet, including the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, had urged Starmer to submit a timetable for his resignation. The report also said that the number of Labour MPs calling for Starmer to resign or to set out a timetable for stepping down had reached 72. Another UK media also said that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper advised Starmer to oversee an orderly transition of power.
In a speech to Labour supporters in London, Starmer appealed for voters to continue supporting him. He said that holding a leadership election at the current stage would only lead to chaos, and he promised to be bolder in the future. Without resignation, he reiterated he would prove those who doubt him are wrong.
