A fatal accident involving a high-altitude amusement facility recently occurred at the Maliu Rock Waterfall Scenic Area in Huaying, Sichuan Province. A 16-year-old girl, while experiencing the "cliff swing" high-altitude attraction, is suspected of having an abnormality in her safety harness. Shortly after sliding out from the platform, she fell directly from a great height into the valley below and died on the way to the hospital.
Video of the accident has gone viral online, sparking an outcry among netizens. Local authorities have preliminarily determined that the case constitutes a "production safety liability accident" on the part of the enterprise, and the scenic area has been fully shut down for rectification.
According to comprehensive reports from media, the accident occurred on the afternoon of May 3 at the Maliu Rock Waterfall Scenic Area in Xikou Town, Huaying City, Guang'an, Sichuan Province. The deceased, a teenage girl surnamed Liu, was experiencing the park's "waterfall swing," also known as a "cliff swing." Video footage circulating at the scene shows the girl, wearing a black top and shorts, a safety helmet, and a blue cape, being assisted by staff to put on a safety harness before slowly sliding out from the platform on a pulley device. Shortly after she passed over the railing, the rope above her head suddenly detached, causing her to fall from a great height and strike the cliff face. Some witnesses noted that after she fell, the girl was still hanging from the rope and appeared to show no signs of life at the scene. Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, she was pronounced dead.
The Huaying City "May 3" accident investigation team stated on May 5 that tourist Liu (female, 16) was injured while experiencing the waterfall swing project and died on the way to the hospital. Local authorities have established a special investigation team to conduct an in-depth probe into the cause of the accident. The preliminary determination is that this case is a production safety liability accident on the part of the enterprise. The relevant responsible entities and personnel are being investigated and handled in accordance with laws and regulations, and authorities are working with the victim's family to handle subsequent aftermath arrangements.
Following the incident, the involved scenic area issued a temporary closure announcement on May 4, citing "force majeure factors." To fully ensure the safety of facilities and equipment and to carry out specialized inspections and maintenance, the scenic area suspended operations from May 4 to May 10.
Public information shows that the Maliu Rock Waterfall Scenic Area has become a popular spot in Southwest China in recent years due to its high-altitude adventure facilities going viral online. The Huaying City government website introduced earlier this year (February) that the scenic area features a typical stream-river valley topography, with a total drop of over 200 meters in the canyon. The Maliu Rock Waterfall itself has a drop of 168 meters and is billed as the "tallest waterfall in Eastern Sichuan."
