Charles came from the Netherlands and has been living in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. As early as 1994, he was already working at a bank in Hong Kong.
When he first arrived in Hong Kong, what surprised him most was how quickly the locals adopted new technology. Mobile phones were still far from widespread at the time, but pagers could already be seen everywhere on the streets of Hong Kong. This is something completely new to Charles. Soon after, he bought his first mobile phone in the city.
Charles has personally witnessed the enormous changes that have taken place in Hong Kong over the years. He says one of the biggest transformations is the city's rapid digitalization. From pagers to smartphones to electronic payments, Hong Kong has always been at the forefront. Today, in his view, Hong Kong has become an international metropolis that is even more digitalized than many European cities.
