US President Donald Trump announced on social media that he has suspended the initiative to guide stranded ships from the Strait of Hormuz, to see whether a deal with Iran can be finalised and signed.
In his post, Trump said the decision was made in response to the requests of mediators, including Pakistan, as well as other countries, and also in light of the US's major achievements in its military action against Iran.
He added that US and Iranian representatives have also made significant progress toward reaching a final agreement. However, the US will maintain its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military launched the rerouting operation known as "Project Freedom" on Monday (May 4, local time), stating that it would guide ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz to leave. However, a British shipping media report said the Strait of Hormuz is still closed, and that vessels stuck there do not trust the US "Project Freedom". Shipowners'main concern is whether the US would intervene once Iran attacks the vessels.
