The five-day Labor Day holiday ("Golden Week") in the Chinese mainland enters its second day today (May 2). The Immigration Department (IMMD) earlier estimated that around 6 million people would enter and exit Hong Kong during the holiday period, with approximately 5 million of them passing through various land border control points.
The department expects the peak for outbound travel via land checkpoints to be today, with around 636,000 outbound trips; while the peak for inbound travel is forecast for tomorrow (May 3), reaching an estimated 688,000 trips.
According to netizen reports, the Liantang (Heung Yuen Wai) Control Point has been crowded and congested all morning today, with crossing taking at least 30 minutes. Videos posted by netizens show long queues of tour groups waiting to enter Hong Kong, as well as Hong Kong residents pulling small carts as they exit through the control point.
Furthermore, the Futian Port (Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point) and the Shenzhen Bay Control Point are also experiencing heavy passenger flow, with long queues forming at clearance counters. Residents who need to cross the border via any of these control points are advised to allow ample time.
