Hong Kong police have arrested three male taxi drivers during a two-day operation targeting illegal practices in the taxi trade over the May Day "Golden Week" holiday period.

The suspects were arrested on allegations including fare overcharging, failure to display a taxi meter, and dangerous driving. All taxis involved have been impounded for inspection.

One of the suspects, a 31-year-old local driver accused of dangerous driving, was said to be active in the Sai Kung area and had frequently posted videos online allegedly showing reckless driving.

Officers conducted an undercover operation posing as passengers and carried out surveillance.

The driver was observed weaving through traffic at high speed, reaching up to 160 km/h. He completed a journey from Sai Kung to the Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point in about 30 minutes before being intercepted at the checkpoint.

Police also found the vehicle had been illegally modified.

The other two drivers, arrested the previous day and aged between 43 and 66, were suspected of overcharging fares, failing to display taxi meters, and not properly displaying driver identification.

In one case, a standard fare of HK$200 was allegedly inflated to as much as HK$540.

Police stressed that roads are not racetracks or playgrounds, and irresponsible dangerous driving—particularly by public service vehicle drivers—not only endangers the drivers themselves but also puts passengers and other road users at risk.

Authorities urged drivers not to imitate such behavior and said enforcement efforts against malpractice in the taxi industry will continue.
