US President Donald Trump said on social media that Washington is studying and assessing a reduction of American troops stationed in Germany, with a decision expected in the near future.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has been trading barbs with Trump over the Iran conflict, said the two leaders still maintain a good relationship, while reiterating that he had doubts about the war from the very beginning. He said Germany and Europe are now bearing the severe consequences of the Iran conflict and called for a swift resolution. Merz had earlier criticised the US military action against Iran for lacking a plan and a negotiation strategy, leaving the United States in a difficult position and facing "humiliation" by Iran.
Trump later hit back on his social media platform, criticising Merz for having no idea what he was talking about. He said Merz's remarks amounted to endorsing Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, adding that it was no wonder Germany is currently performing poorly on the economy and other fronts.
