The University of Hong Kong (HKU) officially established the School of Governance and Policy on April 27. At the inaugural ceremony of the School, Dot Dot News reporter interviewed Professor James A. Robinson, the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics.

The reporter asked, "You have mentioned that Hong Kong's openness is a choice. In your opinion, what are the key institutions underlying HK's adoption of such an open policy? And are these foundations still solid today?"

Professor Robinson responded, "Hong Kong has long served as a pivotal commercial hub and a historic transit port. Looking at China as a whole, Deng Xiaoping initiated a new development paradigm in 1978, shifting the nation toward global trade and comprehensive openness. HK boasts a long-standing export-oriented tradition. This enduring legacy of openness will undoubtedly be sustained and continue to thrive in the future."

He further elaborated, "It is widely acknowledged that effective policies must be tailored to local cultural contexts to achieve success. What insights can African nations, which are the focus of my research, gain from the development experiences of China and Hong Kong? To fully comprehend these valuable lessons, it is essential to understand the cultural framework that underpins the development trajectory of China and Hong Kong."

When asked about the necessary measures for Hong Kong to sustain its status as a global hub, Robinson stated, "I believe Hong Kong has already firmly secured this position. The city is home to outstanding talents from all over the world and remains a preeminent global economic hub. The University of Hong Kong stands out for its strong international orientation and ambitious vision. I can witness vigorous development and vibrant vitality in Hong Kong and even the whole of China on the global stage."
