Darren Wang's case of evading military service has seen new developments today (April 22). Taiwan's artist Darren Wang was sentenced to six months in prison this morning.
The evading military service case is an incident in which individuals allegedly used illicit means, such as forging medical records or physical examination reports, to avoid or reduce mandatory military service in Taiwan.
It is understood that Darren Wang had previously spent NT$3.6 million to forge false medical records in an attempt to "dodge the draft" (commonly known as evading military service). Unexpectedly, the syndicate's ringleader, Chen Zhiming, was jailed in February 2025 on suspected drug trafficking and fraud charges and subsequently lost contact. Believing that Chen had taken his money without delivering on the service, Darren Wang, without admitting to his own draft evasion, angrily reported to the police that he had been defrauded.
Without confessing to his draft evasion, Darren Wang was unexpectedly discovered by prosecutors, through his phone conversations, to be suspected of evading military service. Further investigation by the police and prosecutors revealed that Wang had asked others to help check personal information and recover money through both legal and illegal channels, which then led to an additional case concerning the illegal checking of personal information.
Reviewing the sequence of events: After mistakenly believing he had been defrauded, Darren Wang approached his well-connected, wealthy friend You Xiangmin. On February 13 of last year, they went to the Taipei police department's criminal investigation corps to seek help from Liu Jurong, who was then the acting captain of the third investigation unit.
After receiving the relevant information provided by Darren Wang, Liu Jurong checked Chen Zhiming's personal information and relayed it to Wang Mainland through You Xiangmin. Liu also discovered that Chen Zhiming had already been imprisoned on February 6 of last year. Upon receiving the message that Chen Zhiming was in jail, Wang immediately texted a friend, saying, "I found him, he's inside." "He just went in on 2/6, so he's definitely problematic. Also, I checked, and his three generations have a pile of criminal records. I'll sue him first. If he doesn't pay back the money, I'll go after his whole family."
