A shocking scandal has erupted in Japan. A male on-duty police officer was arrested last September at a station in Saitama Prefecture for secretly photographing up women's skirts. Further investigation revealed that over a 13-year period he had been secretly photographing nude images of female corpses in the mortuary rooms of multiple police stations.
According to Japanese media, the suspect is a 52-year-old inspector originally assigned to Ayase Police Station. The probe found that between 2009 and 2022, he worked as a forensic technician at several stations, including Akabane, Joto, and Fuchu. While carrying out autopsies and on-site examinations, he used his personal phone to covertly photograph the naked bodies of about 20 women who had died of unnatural causes and were placed in police mortuaries.
When police searched his home they found roughly 500 image files of female corpses. Although the number of photos is staggering, investigators say there is no initial sign that any of the images have been leaked online. When questioned, the officer reportedly admitted the behavior and said he did it to "satisfy sexual desire."
Further investigation found that after Dec. 2022, he had at least five instances of secretly photographing women at stations in Tokyo and Saitama, and he is also suspected of possessing child pornography.
The case has provoked strong public outrage in Japan, with many online commenters criticizing the police system's ability to regulate itself — "If he hadn't been caught for groping, he'd still be on duty," — and expressing horror: "If that were my family member's body in some middle-aged man's phone, I'd be sick to my bones."
