The Transport Department held the Lunar New Year license plate auction yesterday (March 1), offering 49 license plate numbers for public bidding. The only custom license plate, "H," drew intense bidding after several rounds, ultimately selling for HK$20 million, making it the fourth highest price ever; another highly anticipated license plate, the traditional plate "30" sold for HK$4.55 million.
The 26th single-letter license plate "H" had a starting price of HK$5,000. As the eighth letter in the English alphabet, "H" also carries positive connotations related to this year's Year of the Horse. The bidding for "H" was fierce right from the start, with an opening bid reaching HK$5 million. After 90 bids, it was finally won by the license plate number 135 for HK$20 million, prompting applause from the audience. The successful bidder is a man who did not participate in interviews.
