The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong (HKCEA) held its spring reception today (Feb. 26), with Chief Executive John Lee and Sun Shangwu, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office, attending.
Lee noted that since 1953, HKCEA has been a cornerstone of Cantonese opera. The government supports the art form by providing venues, including the Xiqu Centre, Ko Shan Theatre, Yau Ma Tei Theatre, and, since last year, Sha Tin Town Hall's Auditorium.
Through the Cantonese Opera Development Fund, the government funds research, promotion, and training. As a venue partner of Yau Ma Tei Theatre, HKCEA has run the Young Talents Training Scheme for over a decade with funding support, cultivating successors for the industry. This year, the scheme is being further deepened with more systematic training.
Lee encouraged the industry to create new repertoires incorporating humorous, comedic, or satirical elements, which he noted are very popular and can attract new audiences to Cantonese Opera.
