Secretary for Justice Paul Lam on Friday (Feb. 20) pledged to strengthen the legal system to better support the nation's reform and opening-up efforts.

He said officials would study how to contribute to national development as Beijing was fleshing out its blueprint for the next five years.

"We should think about how we can make better use of our common law system, which is already very internationalised, to assist in the country's overall development," Lam told a Metro Radio programme.

"I think we should further strengthen our legal system on various fronts, including our policies."

On the Department of Justice's work priorities for the coming year, Lam said it would be focused on providing legal assistance to other government bureaus, such as on the development of the Northern Metropolis.

The chief executive has said the government will be introducing dedicated legislation to speed up the mega infrastructure project's development.
