Financial Secretary Paul Chan on Sunday (Feb. 15) said he expects 1.43 million mainland travellers to visit the SAR during the Lunar New Year holiday period, a six percent year-on-year increase compared to the previous year.
In his weekly blog, Chan noted that there were 7.23 million arrivals since January 1, up 9.6 percent, in which overseas visitor arrivals saw a 16.4 percent surge.
"Hong Kong's Lunar New Year is rich in atmosphere, blending tradition and modern elements, with plenty of mega events and performances, providing exciting options and drawing in many tourists," he wrote.
On Saturday, Chan went to the Victoria Park flower market to give Lunar New Year blessings.
He talked to vendors, which included secondary school and university students.
He praised them for their creativity in coming up with Year of the Horse-themed products and blending trendy sayings with New Year blessings.
The finance secretary noted that a series of events will be launched across the city during the three-day Lunar New Year holiday, including a float parade at Tsim Sha Tsui on Tuesday, a fireworks display over Victoria Harbour on Wednesday, and the New Year horse races on Thursday.
Chan said Hong Kong will be buzzing with festive excitement throughout the Lunar New Year period.
