A recent social media post has sparked heated discussions after a netizen shared an image of an MTR-issued warning notice, claiming they were penalized for swearing in an MTR station. The post revealed that offenders could face a fine of HK$5,000 for a repeat offense.
Responding to media inquiries, MTR Corporation confirmed the incident occurred on Jan. 23 at Po Lam Station. The warning was issued when staff intervened in a passenger dispute and invoked the "Notification of Mass Transit Railway By-laws Infringement."
The MTR stated that using foul language or engaging in disruptive behavior violates By-law 28H under the MTR By-laws. Typically, MTR staff will assess the situation and issue verbal warnings or written notices based on the circumstances. In cases that require further action, a "Notice of Intended Prosecution" may be issued, and the case will be referred to the company's legal department for follow-up.
