In a recent interview with DotDotNews reporters, Erik Yim, vice chairman of China Merchants Port Holding and member of the HK Legislative Council, described the 20-year sentence handed down to Jimmy Lai as a "rightful and deserved outcome" that reinforces the core spirit of Hong Kong's rule of law and demonstrates the city's unshaken dedication to safeguarding national security.
Speaking in response to the landmark ruling, Yim highlighted that the 156-day trial and the court's detailed 855-page judgment reflect an exhaustive and evidence-based judicial process. He emphasized that Lai's actions clearly violated multiple charges under Article 29 of the Hong Kong National Security Law.
"This fair verdict aligns fully with legal standards in common law jurisdictions and meets the expectations of the community," Yim stated. He added that the ruling sends a clear message that on matters of national security, there are no exceptions—no special industries, no special individuals, and everyone is equal before the law.
Yim stressed that upholding national security is a statutory duty for all citizens and a norm observed internationally. In a time of complex global changes, he noted, it is essential to remain vigilant in protecting national security to ensure Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity.
When asked about the implications of this first sentencing under the National Security Law for collusion with foreign forces, Yim asserted that any action challenging the law's bottom line will be met with strict and firm enforcement. He called on all sectors of society to learn from this case and contribute to safeguarding national security.
Regarding the need for stronger legal measures against fake news and external collusion, Yan expressed clear support for enhancing relevant regulations. He pointed out that false information can provoke social conflict, disrupt stability, and undermine national security. Yan believes that during the current government term, the Legislative Council should advance legislation targeting fake news.
Responding to concerns among some residents and the media about legal clarity and freedom, Yim reassured that such worries are unfounded. He explained that completing Article 23 legislation will provide clearer legal boundaries, and as long as activities do not cross national security red lines, individuals and businesses in Hong Kong will continue to enjoy robust legal protection.
"This will further consolidate Hong Kong's reputation as one of the world's freest economies," Yim concluded, expressing confidence in the future of Hong Kong's rule of law and business environment.
