The recent overnight removal of a large quantity of gold bricks embedded in the floor of the lobby at Grand Emperor Hotel in Macao has drawn widespread attention. On the evening of Feb. 4, the hotel confirmed in an announcement that the gold, weighing over 79 kilograms in total, had been sold for approximately HK$99.7 million.
It is reported that the gold was originally purchased for around HK$9.4 million. After deducting transaction costs of about HK$100,000, the hotel expects to record a gain of roughly HK$90.2 million from the sale.
According to media reports, over the past two decades, the group laid 78 gold bricks—each made of Swiss 999.9 pure gold and bearing a unique serial number—along the main passageways of the hotel lobby. This was done to create a luxurious and grand atmosphere in the casino area and enhance the brand image of the hotel.
In late October 2025, the casino operations at Grand Emperor Hotel Macao ceased. Following this, the hotel concluded that the gold no longer aligned with its repositioning. As the relevant area is planned to be renovated and redesigned, the precious metal, originally part of the hotel's interior design and furnishings, is no longer related to the future theme of the hotel, the hotel stated.
With gold prices currently at high levels, the hotel considered the sale a favorable opportunity to realize and unlock the value of the precious metal, while also allowing the listed company to save on related security and insurance expenses in the future.
