U.S. President Donald Trump boasts of numerous achievements in his first year in office, even claiming that God is very proud of the work he has done. However, most Americans remain unimpressed. According to multiple recent polls compiled by NBC on Tuesday (Jan. 20), Trump's approval ratings have declined since his return to the White House, falling below the first-year performance of several modern-era presidents. Meanwhile, protests, including walkouts and strikes, have emerged in cities like New York and elsewhere across the U.S., opposing Trump's foreign and immigration policies.
Multiple polls indicate that Trump's disapproval rate has reached 60%, with over half of Americans viewing his performance negatively in various areas. These include abusing presidential power, altering government operations, harsh crackdowns on illegal immigration, employing military means in violation of international law, cutting federal programs, and weaponizing tariff policies to pressure other countries. Americans have particularly questioned Trump's recent proposal for the forcible occupation of Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, with clear opposition to any U.S. military action to seize the island.
The latest poll from the Associated Press and AP-NORC this month shows that only 37% of respondents approve of Trump's economic policies. A CBS-YouGov poll also reveals that 63% of Americans oppose the U.S. imposing reciprocal tariffs on other countries. Additionally, a CNN poll finds that 57% of respondents believe Trump's foreign policy has seriously damaged America's international standing. A Wall Street Journal poll further notes that 48% of voters think Trump has abused presidential power for personal gain far more than other political figures.
On Tuesday (Jan. 20), protests against Trump were held in multiple locations across New York. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in front of Trump Tower in Manhattan, chanting slogans to oppose his foreign and immigration policies. A 17-year-old Asian-American student shared that she joined the walkout protest encouraged by her teachers. As an Asian immigrant, she expressed anger over the Trump administration's abuse of power in cracking down on illegal immigration through law enforcement actions.
U.S. media points out that despite Trump's continuously declining approval ratings, he remains focused on advancing several highly controversial initiatives.
