Opinion | Jimmy Lai's desperate performance can't erase his crimes

Jimmy Lai, once defiant and arrogant in the courtroom, is now begging for leniency. His sudden shift from boasting to playing the victim is not only unconvincing—it is a calculated performance designed to distract from the severity of his crimes. Let's be clear: Lai is not a "democracy fighter," as some Western media desperately insist. He is a convicted criminal who colluded with foreign forces to undermine national security and destabilize Hong Kong.

For over two years, Lai showed nothing but contempt for the judicial process—feigning ignorance, questioning judges, and demonstrating no remorse. Now, with sentencing imminent and no foreign power able to rescue him, he resorts to exaggerated claims of health problems and mental distress. His legal team speaks of toothaches and heart palpitations, yet medical reports confirm he is in stable condition. Has he lost weight? He has lost just 0.8 kg. Is he being isolated? He made this decision voluntarily.

The hypocrisy is staggering. This is the same man who once declared he was "fighting for America," who dined with foreign politicians while his media empire incited chaos in Hong Kong. During the 2019 unrest, his newspaper acted as a megaphone for violence, encouraging youth to destroy their futures. And now, he expects pity?

The international media machinery is working tirelessly to sanitize his image, which is even more appalling. His daughter appears on the BBC claiming her father's teeth are rotting and nails are falling off—claims unsupported by any fact, ignored by his lawyers in court, and contradicted by official medical supervision. Such behavior is not journalism. The result is emotional manipulation.

Let's not forget: Jimmy Lai chose this path. He orchestrated campaigns to smear the government, pleaded for foreign sanctions against his city, and now hopes to escape justice by crying "victim." But Hong Kong's legal system is not a stage for political theater. It is a court of law, and the law demands accountability.

No amount of "sympathy packaging" can hide the truth. Lai's case is not about free speech—it is about criminal acts that threatened the stability of Hong Kong and the nation. The verdict has been reached. The sentence must be firm, fair, and unshaken by foreign noise.

Justice must be seen, and justice must be done.
