Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital, was found guilty last month by the High Court on two counts of conspiring to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiring to publish seditious publications. The ironclad facts of the case are clearly outlined in the 855-page ruling by the court. Before and after the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, Lai openly requested meetings with certain high-ranking foreign officials and solicited foreign sanctions against the central government and the Hong Kong SAR government.
In a July 10, 2019, speech at a seminar organized by the US think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Jimmy Lai expressed support for America in its Cold War-like stance against China.
He stated, "Starting a cold war with China today, and we're on your side," and hinted that the US could "use nuclear weapons to finish China." "This is something that America has to know not only supporting us, but use your moral authority."
The judge noted in the ruling that there is confidence Lai is the mastermind behind the three conspiracy charges, having deliberately used Apple Daily as a platform to conspire to publish seditious materials, thereby colluding with foreign forces and posing a threat to national security.
