A cold weather warning remains in effect in Hong Kong as the Hong Kong Observatory issued a frost warning for the second consecutive day.

According to the Observatory, the winter monsoon is bringing exceptionally dry and clear weather to the Guangdong coastal region. This morning (Jan. 9), temperatures across HK dropped to around 12°C, with parts of the New Territories experiencing temperatures below 7°C due to significant radiation cooling under clear skies.

In Ta Kwu Ling, the Observatory recorded a low of 1.9°C, with frost forming on the rooftops of several private cars. In Sheung Wo Hang village in Sha Tau Kok, dew appeared on tree leaves, while fog and water droplets were observed on car windshields.

The Observatory noted that the monsoon is expected to weaken slightly over the weekend, leading to a slight rebound in temperatures across southern China, although mornings will remain cool. An easterly airstream is expected to bring strong winds to the coastal areas of southern China early next week.

By mid to late next week, the dry northeast monsoon will bring mostly clear skies to the Guangdong coastal region.
