During the New Year's holiday, Sai Kung's High Island Reservoir East Dam attracted a large number of residents and tourists. According to data, Green Minibus Route 9A, which runs between Pak Tam Chung and the East Dam, carried a total of 4,100 passengers yesterday (Jan. 1), more than double the average weekend daily ridership of about 2,000 passengers.
In the morning, increased taxi usage by tourists heading to the East Dam led to temporary congestion on Sai Kung Man Yee Road. In response, police implemented temporary traffic control measures from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm on New Year's Day to help manage traffic flow.
The Transport Department stated on social media that to accommodate the significantly higher passenger demand during the holiday, it had proactively coordinated with the Route 9A minibus operator to flexibly adjust vehicle deployment. The number of minibuses was increased from the usual weekend fleet of 4 to a maximum of 20, with service frequency boosted from the scheduled 15–20 minutes to an average of about 2 minutes during peak periods. Additionally, minibus services started two hours earlier at 7:30 am and were extended by 1.5 hours, ending at 8:00 pm The Transport Department also urged the taxi industry to deploy additional vehicles to assist in passenger transport.
The Transport Department emphasized that it will maintain close communication with transport operators and continue monitoring pedestrian and traffic conditions around the East Dam to meet the travel needs of residents and tourists.
