The Eighth Legislative Council members were sworn in today (Jan. 1) at the Legislative Council Complex, with Chief Executive John Lee presiding over the ceremony. After the 90 members completed their oaths, Mr. Lee addressed the council, highlighting the solemn responsibilities entailed by their pledges.

Mr. Lee outlined three expectations for the legislators: uphold the executive-led system and under the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong"; adhere strictly to the "Code of Conduct for Legislative Council Members"; and balance attention to specific community needs with the broader interests of society and the nation.

Looking ahead, Mr. Lee noted that this year marks the launch of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan and emphasized Hong Kong's focus on deepening reform, boosting the economy, and improving livelihoods. He urged legislators to support the government's efforts in aligning with national development strategies—including the 15th Five-Year Plan and the Northern Metropolis initiative—and to contribute to post-fire recovery and systemic reforms to prevent future tragedies.
