The swearing-in ceremony for members-elect of the Eighth Legislative Council was held today (Jan. 1) at 11:00 am in the Chamber of the Legislative Council Complex. Chief Executive John Lee presided over the ceremony as the officiating officer. Following the swearing-in, members took a group photo with the Chief Executive and government officials. The government will also announce the list of legislators whose oaths were valid after the ceremony.

After the ceremony commenced, the national anthem was played. The first to take the oath today was the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong's Starry Lee, who has been re-elected since 2008. During the oath-taking for the Election Committee constituency's Junius Ho, he attempted to recite the oath from memory without referring to the text, but stumbled over the final two sentences, leading to unclear phrasing. Secretary General of the LegCo Secretariat, Dora Wei, pointed out the unclear delivery and requested him to repeat the oath. On his second attempt, Junius Ho referred to the text and completed the oath successfully.

During the oath recitation, Liberal Party's Michael Lee, Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions' Stanley Ng, and New People's Party's Judy Chan also delivered their oaths unclearly. Secretary General of the LegCo Secretariat, Dora Wei, requested each of them to repeat the oath separately.
