As 2025 comes to a close, the entertainment industry has experienced a year full of ups and downs. Last month's tragic No. 5 five alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po left many deeply saddened. Numerous celebrities mourned the victims through donations, tributes, and even canceling performances. As 2026 approaches, artists are gradually resuming regular activities, with hopes that those affected by the tragedy can heal over time and rebuild their lives.
Concerts canceled out of respect
Karen Mok, Ken Hung, and Jace Chan were among the artists who announced the postponement or cancellation of their concerts. MAMA Awards introduced a moment of silence and donated to families affected by the fire, with the theme of "Supporting Hong Kong" to uplift spirits and spread positive energy. MIRROR also announced their withdrawal from the awards ceremony. During the event, Chow Yun-fat attended as a presenter, where he observed a moment of silence with the audience and extended his condolences to those impacted by the Tai Po fire.
Meanwhile, Miriam Yeung adjusted her concert to pay tribute. She donated all profits from her first show and related merchandise, observed a moment of silence with her audience, and altered costume designs and canceled fireworks effects to express her condolences.
Keung To's mysterious sea accident
On June 24, Keung To unexpectedly fell into the sea near the western coast of Hong Kong Island. He was rescued by a passing vessel and taken to the hospital for treatment. His agency released a statement explaining that Keung To had been jogging along the waterfront in Sai Wan when he felt dizzy and lost consciousness, waking up only after being rescued. Keung later reassured fans via social media, calling the incident a minor accident caused by carelessness and promising to be more cautious in the future.
The opening of Kai Tak Sports Park
In April, the long-anticipated Kai Tak Sports Park officially opened. Major performers, including Coldplay, Nicholas Tse, Mayday, and G.E.M. (Gloria Tang), held large-scale concerts at the venue, providing fans with a brand-new experience. Additionally, the TIDES performance venue in Whampoa and the East Kowloon Cultural Centre opened in the second half of the year, offering new spaces for small- to mid-sized performances.
Challenges facing the film and television industry
Co-produced dramas have become a significant pillar for TVB in the HK drama market this year, with titles like "Murder Diary 12", "Prism Breaker", "The Queen of Castle", and "The Queen of News 2" leading the way. In contrast, the production of original TVB dramas saw a sharp decline, with only about eight original series released throughout the year—the lowest in two decades.
Singer Gigi Yim, whose contract with TVB ended this year, decided to leave the station and establish her own production company. She held her first solo concert on Christmas Eve at the AsiaWorld-Expo.
In the film industry, only 21 HK movies were released in 2025. Films that achieved over HK$10 million at the box office included "Another World", "Hit N Fun", "Peg O' My Heart", "The Way We Talk", and "Sons of the Neon Night". Overall, the total box office revenue for 2025 was approximately HK$563 million, a 16.26% decline compared to 2024's HK$673 million.
Farewell to numerous artists
This year saw the passing of several prominent figures in the entertainment world. Taiwan actress Barbie Hsu (Big S) tragically passed away at the age of 48 in January due to influenza complications while in Japan. That same month, music prodigy Khalil Fong died at the age of 41 after battling illness. Veteran actor Benz Hui succumbed to cancer-related organ failure in October at the age of 76. Other beloved stars who passed away this year include Stanley Feng, the couple Tong Kai and Shuet Nei, Chow Chung, and Lai Suen, leaving fans and the industry mourning their loss.
