The Nine-Carp Lantern Dance, popular in Huangshi Town, Putian City, is recognized as a traditional dance under the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects.
Initially a folk performance intended to bring blessings and drive away evil spirits, it has gradually transformed into a celebratory dance symbolizing good fortune. The dance is inspired by the folk tale of the "carp leaping over the dragon gate."
Traditionally, the Lantern Dance is performed only during the Lantern Festival in the Year of the Dragon, which occurs once every twelve years. However, exceptions are made during times of major disasters or epidemics, when the dance is performed to pray for rain, dispel evil, and seek a good harvest.
In modern times, these traditional restrictions no longer apply to performances.
