Maohou, or hairy monkey, is a unique traditional handicraft of Beijing that dates back to the Qing Dynasty.
The bodies of these intricate 10-by-5 millimeter figurines are crafted from white magnolia buds and cicada shells. Named "hairy monkey" due to their resemblance to monkeys, these creations use simple, natural materials.
However, through keen observation and artistic insight, craftsmen transform these humble components into intricate designs. By using magnolia buds for the body and attaching heads and limbs carved from cicada shells, they skillfully create unique artworks in a variety of shapes and poses.
