Today, Dec. 24, marks Christmas Eve, and Hong Kong is abuzz with festive energy as streets teem with residents and tourists soaking in the holiday atmosphere. However, the Hong Kong Observatory has warned of a cold spell.
A replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the coastal areas of southern China tonight or early tomorrow morning, bringing cooler weather just in time for Christmas Day (Dec. 25). Temperatures will drop further on Boxing Day (Dec. 26), with urban areas experiencing lows of 14°C and parts of the New Territories seeing temperatures plunge to as low as 10°C.
This year's Christmas weather features a "warm-to-cold" transition. Daytime temperatures today remain mild, with many areas recording over 20°C. Some districts, such as Sheung Shui, Tsuen Wan, and Happy Valley, even reached highs of 25°C.
However, as the northerly winds strengthen tomorrow (Dec. 25), temperatures will begin to drop. By Boxing Day (Dec. 26), urban areas will see minimum temperatures of around 14°C, while certain parts of the New Territories will experience even colder conditions.
According to the Observatory's district weather forecast, Boxing Day morning will be chilly, with areas such as Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Lau Fau Shan, and Shek Kong registering 11-12°C, while Ta Kwu Ling may hit a frigid 10°C.
Clear skies are expected over the weekend, although mornings will remain cool, and inland regions will experience significant day-night temperature fluctuations.
