This December, Hong Kong has experienced significantly warmer-than-average temperatures, with the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) yet to issue a cold weather warning this autumn and winter.
Since the warning is triggered when urban temperatures drop to 12°C or below, the lowest recorded temperature so far remains at 13.2°C on Nov. 19. If this trend continues through December, it will mark the first time since the warning system was established in 1999 that no cold weather warning was issued in November or December.
According to the HKO, a surge of monsoon winds is expected to reach the southern coast of China on Christmas morning (Dec. 25), bringing cooler weather. North winds will cause temperatures to drop, with the lowest forecasted temperature reaching 14°C on Dec. 26.
However, temperatures are expected to gradually rise again, with urban areas predicted to see lows of 18°C on New Year's Eve (Dec. 31). This makes it unlikely that a cold weather warning will be issued in the next nine days, potentially breaking the latest issuance record set on Dec. 30, 2007.
The HKO added that during the weekend of Dec. 27–28, HK will remain cool in the mornings and evenings, with clear and dry weather expected. Significant temperature differences between day and night will persist.
