The verdict for the case involving Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital, and three related companies of Apple Daily, accused of conspiring to collude with foreign forces, was announced on Dec. 15. The three judges designated under the National Security Law found Lai guilty on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious material.
Vice Chairman of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Leung Chun-ying, issued a stern statement on social media, strongly questioning and criticizing a report by the BBC Chinese service.
Leung pointed out that Apple Daily was not a newspaper, but a political publication that dressed up its anti-China, anti-Hong Kong stance with sensationalism and fabrications.
