Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital, was found guilty on all three charges of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law and colluding with foreign forces. The court clearly stated that Jimmy Lai was not on trial for his political views or beliefs, but was based on the law and evidence.
When recalling the days of social unrest, Allan Zeman described it as "no fun living here (Hong Kong)". "All the streets were blocked, protesters were out every single night," he said.
He also mentioned how young people were coerced by payment to go stand on the front lines and protest. He said that some reporters told him they were gonna quit their jobs because they could get HK$5,000 for standing every night on the front line, while the salary they earned per month was HK$8,000.
"It really sent a terrible message around the world. It disrupted the life of the people of Hong Kong just because Jimmy wanted what he called the press freedom. So it was not a question of press freedom or anything like that. You cannot do that anywhere, and it's subversive against the government," he added.
