Jimmy Lai, the founder of Next Digital, was found guilty on all three charges of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law and colluding with foreign forces. The court clearly stated that Jimmy Lai was not on trial for his political views or beliefs, but was based on the law and evidence.
Recently, Gordon Lam, Hong Kong SAR Deputy to the 14th National People's Congress, as well as Chairman of Hong Kong Technology Association, pointed out that this verdict is a clear affirmation that no one is above the law.
He stressed that the trial followed established legal procedures under the Hong Kong National Security Law and local status. The core issue was never about a person's profession or general opinions, but about assessing specific acts, such as conspiracy with external forces against clear legal standards designed to protect national security.
"Safeguarding national security is the fundamental cornerstone for Hong Kong's stability and continued prosperity. The rule of law means that laws must be followed and enforced. This judgment demonstrates that Hong Kong's legal system is functioning as it should, holding individuals accountable for actions that cross legal boundaries, regardless of their status," he said.
He also noted that some international commentary has mistakenly linked this case to "press freedom". "This conflates two separate matters. Hong Kong protects the rights and freedoms of its citizens, but these are not absolute. Every society, including Western countries, draws legal lines where activities threaten its foundational security. Upholding national security and protecting legally grounded freedoms are not contradictory. In fact, the former is the prerequisite for the latter. A stable and secure Hong Kong, governed by the rule of law, is the only environment where the legitimate rights and freedoms of all its residents can truly thrive. This verdict reinforces this principle," he added.
